Freshly is a meal delivery service that ships pre-prepared meals to your front door. Unlike many other meal kit services, you do not have to cut or cook your meals, you simply shove them into a microwave, and they’re good to eat.
As with every subscription service out there, is Freshly really worth it though? They might make your life considerably easier when it comes to having a meal on hand, but is the convenience worth the money?
Don’t worry, we’re going to cover all that.
Before we begin, we do want to point you to our Freshly promo code page, in the event that you decide to order Freshly, you can save money on your first order by using our code. Secondly, since we are a vegan-based website, we’ll just say this out of the gate, Freshly is not vegan-friendly. We’ve already discussed how HelloFresh doesn’t support vegan meals and Freshly falls in the same camp, which is unfortunate.
With that being said, there are opportunities to find vegetarian meals with Freshly, so that might interest some of you! When it comes to this article, we are going to discuss some of the “meat dishes”, as well as the “veggie dishes”.
Is Freshly Worth It?
There are two important factors that need to be considered when discussing whether this service is worth your hard-earned money:
- Quality of the meals
- Cost vs alternatives
Let’s begin with the cost:
How much you pay per meal depends on how big your order is. You can pay as little as $7.99 per meal, to as much as $11.50 per meal. At first glance, it’s clear that this isn’t a cheap service, but, depending on your lifestyle, there is an opportunity for you to save money.
I’ll take myself as an example, as a fellow resident of NYC, it’s become normal to either order lunch or dinner out on a daily basis. If you’re someone that is ordering delivery from a local restaurant several times per week, then Freshly does make sense for you. Paying $8-$11.50 per meal is considerably better than paying $12-$20 for local dinner delivery, especially once you consider the 10-20% tip surcharge on your delivery.
On the flip side, if you love cooking all your meals, and find yourself in a supermarket every weekend, prepping your meals for the rest of the week, then Freshly does not make sense. Without question, you can replicate the meals you’ll find in Freshly for $3-$4 by shopping for your own ingredients and spending time in your kitchen cooking.
How good are the meals?
By this point, we’ve had about 25-30 different Freshly meals delivered. There were some meals that we absolutely loved, and there were some that we really didn’t care for. Overall, are the meals tasty? Yes. Are they restaurant quality? Not really.
Which is where we are left at a tricky situation. At $11.50 per meal, you have many alternatives, such as Chipotle or Sweet Green, two popular franchise in NYC. On the other hand, if you’re paying $7.99 per meal, you begin to really get a bang for your buck.
So what we’re trying to say is that the “quality” of the meal really depends on how much you end up paying for the meal. To pay $7.99 per meal, you will have to have 12 meals delivered weekly. That is the equivalent of eating 2 Freshly meals every day, for 6 days a week. That does sound a bit overwhelming, but if you are living with a spouse or a roommate, it’s a lot more manageable.
What’s interesting is that if you order 6 or 9 meals per week, you’ll pay $8.99 per meal – not bad.
The worst deal is having 4 meals delivered per week, since then there is a hike in the price per meal to $11.50.
Freshly is worth it if you order at least 6 meals per week, plain and simple. The meals are good, and the process is simple, but anything above $8.99 per meal is too pricey.
One point that we didn’t necessarily cover is the health benefits of Freshly meals vs typical take-out, and this is where Freshly edges out the alternatives. The company does place a focus on calorie control, as well as making the meals as nutritious as possible. In other words, if you want easy to eat meals while being health-conscious, Freshly begins to look more attractive as a service.
If you’re still considering, keep in mind that there is an attractive promo code to discount your first few orders. On our Freshly promo page, you will receive $40 off, which is split between $20 off your first order, and $20 off your second order. If you order 6 meals for your first order, usually, that would come out to $59.99 for the whole delivery. That is $9.99 per meal. With the promo code, you will only pay $39.99 for the 6 meals, which is $6.66 per meal. That would be the case for your first delivery, and the second delivery.
At $6.66 per meal, it’s definitely worth it! So at a minimum, give the company a try for a week or two!
