Whole Foods - Vegan Chicken Curry Salad

January 13th, 2008 · 5 Comments

Yesterday, Jane and I went to Whole Foods to stock up on some of the vegan supplies we can’t get at our local Trader Joe’s.

phpqZGkp7While we were there we also stopped at the prepared foods counter. We picked up the vegan chicken curry salad and some fresh hand-made tortillas. It was excellent. The tortillas were moist and the vegan chicken curry salad was comparable to “real” chicken curry salad, or at least the “real” chicken curry salad I remember from over six months ago! :-)

We had a little bit of the chicken curry salad, a hand-made tortilla, half a sandwich made with Yves mock meats and a salad. Quite delicious.

Awww, I’m so envious! The Whole Foods here (Dallas) looked at me like I had a unicorn horn growing out of my head when I asked them about vegan versions of their chicken salads.

Wow Chris, I’m so sorry to hear that. I figured they were a chain and if one of them offered something the rest would.
Our Whole Foods has a customer request board as you are walking out the door. If yours does as well, maybe you could write and ask for vegan prepared foods… Or speak to the customer service manager. We’ve found their customer service to be excellent.

I’ve been vegetarian for 12 years, vegan for 3. This is sooo delicious. They also have another salad with the same “chicken” chunks, grapes, almonds, etc. I occasionally shop at my local Whole Foods in St. Paul, and they seem to have one of the two salads nearly every time I’ve been there. Does anyone know where to get this particular brand of mock chicken they use in these salads? It’s far “meatier” than some others I’ve tried.

Okay, so I did a little research and found that these tasty little bits are commercially available. They also make “beef”! The company is called Garden Protein International, and the product name is Gardein. So delicious… did I already say that? How can I get my paws on some of this?

Hi Stephanie. The salad with “chicken” chunks, grapes, pecans, etc is the Vegan Chicken Sonoma Salad. We’ve actually blogged about it here. Jane really enjoys that one.
Short of writing to GPI, I don’t know where to get the product either. Our local Whole Foods doesn’t sell it as a stand-alone product.
Do you have Trader Joe’s in your neck of the woods? Our Trader Joe’s has two new products — “beef-less strips” and “chicken-less strips” which are manufactured in Canada. Are they Gardein? who knows, Trader Joe’s sells mostly private label stuff, so you never know who the real manufacturer is. Are they good? We don’t know. Jane mentioned she’d like to try them. I’ll certainly write a post after we’ve tasted them. (I’d guess not for another two weeks or so.)
