It’s essential to preventing anemia and to promoting a healthy nervous system. B12 is made by microorganisms that are usually found in gross animal “products,” but the good news is that there are a ton of vegan sources out there. [read more…]

Whole Foods Expands Plant-Based Burger Bar Partnership

Plant-based burgers are having their moment in the culinary world right now: Just as the Impossible Burger is picking up a devoted following and Beyond Burgers hit grocery stores, a new vegetarian burger option has popped up in the form of Next Level Burger—and it’s even being sold at Whole Foods. According to a report from ForbesNext Level Burger, or the NLB, originated in Bend, Oregon, where it turned out to be a hit. Founded by ex-marine Matt de Gruyter and his wife Cierra, neither of whom were vegetarians when they opened their restaurant but now adhere to a plant-based diet, Next Level Burger attracted the attention of Alex Payne, the founder of Twitter, who loved the NLB and decided to become an investor. [read more…]

Vegan used to mean the grilled portobello mushroom; today’s chefs are preparing exquisite and delicious vegan options,” Cowie says. [read more…]

9 out of 10 That Die From it Never Knew They Even Had This Preventable Disease

Diverticula are out-pouchings of our intestine. Doctors like using a tire analogy: high pressures within the gut can force the intestines to balloon out through weak spots in the intestinal wall like an inner tube poking out through a worn tire tread. You can see what they actually look like in my video, Diverticulosis: When Our Most Common Gut Disorder Hardly Existed. These pockets can become inflamed and infected, and, to carry the tire analogy further, can blow out and spill fecal matter into the abdomen, and lead to death. Symptoms can range from no symptoms at all, to a little cramping and bloating, to “incapacitating pain that is a medical emergency.” Nine out of ten people who die from the disease never even knew they had it. [read more…]

Not all vegan or plant-based diets are equally healthy

Move over, low-fat diets. More and more experts are recommending plant-based diets to reduce the risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions such as diabetes and cancer. But are all plant-based diets equally beneficial? And must they be all-or-none eating strategies, or is there a role for a semi-vegetarian or “flexitarian” approach? [read more…]

One type of diet is the best for your body and brain — but a lot of people are doing it wrong

Healthy plant-based diets also appear to significantly reduce the risk of certain diseases including heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer. Recent research also suggests that certain plant-based diets could help protect the brain from some types of age-related decline.

A growing body of evidence suggests that a plant-based diet — one that focuses on vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins — is the single best eating plan for your body and brain. It’s been found to be ideal for losing weight, staying lean, and even keeping the mind sharp. But a lot of people are doing it wrong. [read more…]
