A better Almond milk, Beyond Meat Gets The Ax, Another Plant-Based Ice-Cream

Happy Friday. There are so many plant-based milk options. There’s one from Trader Joe’s which may be better than all the rest. I was so excited to hear that Tim Horton’s started offering Beyond Meat breakfast sandwiches. Not that I live anywhere near a Tim Horton’s. Not that I ever go out for breakfast, but still, I was excited. Apparently few Canadians shared my enthusiasm. Tim Horton’s just pulled the plug on these new brekkie sandwiches in all but two provinces. Well, there’s good news. Breyer’s just came out with plant-based ice cream. Growing up, Breyer’s was the only ice cream my mom let me eat. But maybe most importantly, The Game Changers is going wide.

Trader Joe’s Almond Beverage – Yes, almond milk is everywhere these days, but this almond beverage is about as close to homemade as you can get. Made with just two ingredients: almonds and water, it has no weird stabilizers, gums, or other unwanted additives. Plus, it packs four times more almonds than leading brands. One cup provides 100 calories, 9 grams of healthful fat, 4 grams of plant protein, and just 4 grams of carb with 2 from fiber, along with 6% of your daily calcium needs and 4% for iron. Use this almond beverage in everything from smoothies and overnight oats to vegan mashed potatoes and creamy plant-based soups. Just be aware that because there is no emulsifier added, the milk may separate. You can skim off the delicious almond “cream” that rises to the top, or shake the container to re-blend.

Beyond Breakfast Sandwich Pulled – Shares of Beyond Meat fell as much as 7.1% in intraday trading Wednesday after news broke that Tim Hortons would drop Beyond breakfast sandwiches in all provinces in Canada except for British Columbia and Ontario. “Both the Beyond Burger and Beyond Meat breakfast sandwiches were introduced as a limited time offer,” Tim Hortons said in an email. “We have particularly seen positive reaction to our Beyond Meat offering in Ontario and BC, especially in breakfast, and are proud to offer both alternatives in those regions.”

The Game Changers release – Highly-anticipated vegan documentary The Game Changers has announced its worldwide digital release. The film, which is directed by Oscar-winner Louie Psihoyos and executive produced by Oscar-winner James Cameron, is expected to debut on iTunes on October 1 – and is available for pre-order now. The announcement follows the film’s global cinema premiere on September 16 – which saw several venues sell out.

Breyer’s Vegan Ice Cream – Breyer’s join the cavalcade of ice cream makers to come out with vegan options.

Vegan diets lead to weight and fat loss – There’s even more evidence to suggest switching to plant-based eating may be better for your health. A new study found that overweight and obese adults who switched to a vegan diet had healthier microbiomes, or good gut bacteria, and better insulin sensitivity, which protects against diabetes, than non-vegans. As a result, they also lost weight and body fat without restricting calories. For the study, researchers from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine looked at 148 overweight and obese adults over a period of 16 weeks, half of whom were instructed to follow a low-fat vegan diet.
