In the past, Jane and I have truly enjoyed Indian cuisine. However, being vegan, we are a little reluctant to even try our favorite restaurants. Chicken Tikka Masala is not a vegan dish! And most of the dishes we most enjoy, even though they could be adapted with tofu, contain ghee and/or cream. Alas.
Jane recently bought The Accidental Vegan by Devra Gartenstein, and made our first vegan Indian dish, Palak Tofu. Yum! I knew I was in for a treat when I smelled the aromatic spices as I stepped out of my car tonight.
This is another one for our rotation.

Have you tried any Indian restaurants yet? I’ve had really good experiences with the employees being very knowledgeable about which dishes were and were not vegan. They actually know the word ‘vegan’ and seem to really know what it means. (But maybe that is because I live in Portland?) There are some really good Indian lentil, chickpea and veggie dishes.

Yes, we’ve been to two of the local Indian restaurants here. I’ve blogged about our visits here and in this post , where we learned that Naan isn’t generally a vegan food. Our server actually saved us. We had no idea…

I’ll have to figure out palak tofu! I really miss palak paneer – I used to make my own paneer for it and everything, but now that I don’t do that milk thing . . .

Hi Sparrow,
Jane hasn’t made it in awhile. We tend to be cyclical in our eating.
As for trying to figure it out… we get most of our vegan cookbooks through inter-library loan. Perhaps you can get Gartenstein’s book that way?
