Jane has a friend who works in Hollywood. This woman, Kay, is so busy she only surfaces every few weeks or so, and then we only just manage to meet for breakfast. It's been a long standing thing with us, and we all seem to really enjoy it.
Yesterday was our first breakfast with Kay since we've been doing the vegan thing. Well, I can only say that I am not looking forward to future breakfasts out. The only items on the menu were oatmeal or cream of wheat. And it's not that I don't enjoy a good bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. But that's just not what I want to eat when i go out.
Kay was outwardly sympathetic to our plight, as she plowed into her steak and eggs, but somehow I don't think our shining example of vegan happiness and healthiness is going to convert her any time soon!

Ack! The Flu!!!So I had the flu, or something like it. It's ironic, because they're offering the flu shot at my office this week. Alas, it's a little too late for me. So, here is my tale of woe. I dropped Jane off at the airport on Friday night. She was...
Yule Log -- Daring Baker's December ChallengeOnce upon a time, in my pre-vegan life, I used to love to bake. I'm not an expert baker, but I've always enjoyed it and feel I've met with a certain level of success. I'm often asked to bring a baked dessert when Lane and I are invited to dinner. ...
Stew... Boo!Dinner tonight was some kind of stew: Black eyed peas, yams, spinach, and soy-chorizo (a Mexican spicy sausage). When I used to cook, Jane and I would have discussions about whether cooking is a science (my opinion) or an art (her opinion). I...

I don’t know if breakfast out is still an issue or not, but if you get a chance, check out the DVD from vegangal.com. She has a section where she goes to regular, mainstream, omnivore restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner and orders enough food to feed an army. It’s great to watch her order and see how she asks for things and realize that she was able to fill her table up with vegan food at ordinary restaurants. I found it *highly* educational and I thought before I watched it that I was pretty good at ordering vegan at mainstream restaurants. That woman certainly taught me a thing or three!
Hi Sparrow,
Thanks for the suggestion. We’ll take a look at her site soon. I’m curious how other people navigate restaurants. Jane and I have decided we’ll take the leap of faith that we’re getting what we ask for. But of course, you never really know.
